The Vicksburg Campaign was the Union campaign to take control of Confederate stronghold area of Vicksburg, Mississippi, which lay on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River was the primary channel for supplies and communication through the south, as well as a vital lifeline for goods going north. Both Confederate President Jefferson Davies and President Abraham Lincoln felt strongly that Vicksburg was a key area to gain control of. Beginning in 1862, the campaign held strong until the eventual Confederate surrender on the 4th of July 1863. Resulting in Union control of the entire Mississippi River, and splitting the Confederacy in half.
