Blacksad is a masterclass in sequential storytelling. Juanjo Guarnido and Juan Diaz Canales craft a world of anthropomorphic characters that are just as - if not more - human than you'll find in many other comics. And they do it because of the way they allow their characters to act and live and breathe in the pages of their story. To do that, they rely on three things: emotive composition, juxtaposition, and body acting. I discuss how those three work across one page in Blacksad.
