There are 2 famous Cypress Trees in Congaree National Park, the Harry Hampton Cypress and the General Greene Cypress. We did a hike out to the Hampton Cypress last month and the General Greene today.
This Cypress gets its name from Major General Nathanael Greene of the Continental Army.
It is said the tree was a meeting place after battles in the area, most famously between Brigadier General Francis Marion and General Greene after the battle of Fort Motte.
The tree is just a short walk off of the Bates Ferry Trail and is a little over 1 mile round trip from the trailhead.
The tree has been measure at just over 30 ft in circumference and is considered to be the largest circumference Cypress in the Park. It was sparred from logging operations in the early 1900's because it's hollow!
Along the hike today we spotted a Great Blue Heron, Wood Ducks and Red Shouldered Hawks.
The Bates Ferry Trail can have standing water if the Park is flooding, so be sure to check the National Park website or app for alerts before heading out!
