BBC1 - Saturday 17th March 2007 (early hours) - Continuity and Junctions

It's the early hours of St. Patrick's Day 2007, and The Comic Relief Red Nose Day telethon went into overtime on BBC1, having raised over £40m on the night.

We pick it up at the end of the telethon which concluded with a pre-recorded countdown of some of the best bits from previous telethons and ended with a montage of appeal films from over the years, which explain the silence during the closing slides. After the 9½ hour comedy extravaganza, we have a trailer for the return of Friday Night with Jonathan Ross the following Friday, follow by one for the reality show Castaway, which leads us to the BBC continuity announcing legend that is Duncan Newmarch (https://www.youtu.be/channel/UCmP3GVu...) - and a bunch of surfers - leading us to Weatherview with Elizabeth Saary, who on this occasion was the bearer of bad news for many people.

Then we have a trailer for Stephen Merchant's 6 Music radio show on Sundays, followed by Duncan (and the moon ident) saying a very brief goodnight before handing over to BBC News 24 (as it was known then). BBC1 joined News 24 just as the late Alastair Yates has finished reading the news headlines and starting to give it's BBCi interactive TV services it's regular plug. Then comes Andrew Neil's Straight Talk with his victim...eh I mean...guest for today, the then Equality & Human Rights Commissioner (and now, Sky News presenter) Trevor Phillips.

After that brief spot of News 24, we have a public information film from the National Blood Service, followed by a trailer for a new drama A Class Apart starring Jessie “Kat Slater” Wallace and the late George “Arthur Daly” Cole, and another showing of the Friday Night with Jonathan Ross trailer. Then, in his final announcement of his shift, Mr. Newmarch introduce us to highlights from the the overnight play in the Cricket World Cup, including England's opening match against New Zealand.

Finally, as 6 o'clock is approaching, we have a trailer for the Eurovision Song Contest national selection programme, Making Your Mind Up (and yes, it's that controversial one where there was a bit of confusion on who won that night.). Following that, we have a change of announcer (name please?) taking us to Breakfast with Charlie Stayt (and yes, he is still there in 2022!)
