The West Philippine Sea has been the centre of ongoing disputes regarding the territorial claims and ownership between the Philippines and China. The tension is rising between the two countries ever since the Scarborough Shoal standoff in 2012. China is claiming ownership over these waters based on their nine-dash line claim but the Philippines has a historical and legal basis for claiming sovereignty over the West Philippines Sea.
