Vietnam is one of several governments in East Asia which have territorial claims in the South China Sea. The basis of Vietnam's claim is the historic connection to the islands and reefs of these waters, the majority of which are claimed by Vietnam. This of course brings Vietnam often into conflict with the other large claimant to the South China Sea, which is China. The Chinese-Vietnamese rivalry has led to interesting development in recent decades, in which we see an increasingly friendlier relationship between Vietnam and the United States.
