Here's my version of/improvisation on the classic boogie-woogie piano staple, "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie". Originally recorded in1929 by Clarance "Pinetop" Smith, this is the tune that gave this musical style its name.
I hadn't been playing a lot of straight ahead, swingin' boogie these last bunch of years, but recently I've been finding myself messing around with it a lot!
Here's my spiel on getting the right feel for boogie-woogie. I've been thinking about this a lot recently. Boogie-woogie needs a strong, even, quarter note pulse to get that great, swingin' feel. People forget that when boogie-woogie was popularized in the late 30s, it was during the swing era. If you accentuate the 1st and 3rd beats, you get an earlier barrelhouse feel, with it's ragtime influences. Over accentuate the 2nd and 4th beats - like I hear most often - and the music loses it swing and comes out closer to rock n roll.
