Hiking the Camino de Santiago in Autumn. Crossing the Pyrenees. Days 1 - 4: Saint-Jean to Pamplona.

The Camino Francés (Camino de Santiago or the French Way) is one of the great pilgrimage routes of Europe. Over 1,000 years old, the hike takes you from the French town of Sain-Jean-Pied de-Port to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the body of the apostle James is supposed to be buried - Sant'Iago in Spanish. Covering 800kms (about 500 miles) through northern Spain, taking in the provinces of Navarre, Castile and Leon and Galicia, the hike is a challenging but rewarding walk, taking over a month to complete.

This video covers the first four days, from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, across the Pyrenees through Roncesvalles and Urdaniz to the city of Pamplona. I started the hike in early October, enjoying the cooler autumn weather of the Basque region of northern Spain. Stunning mountain scenery and gorgeous woodlands delight hikers as they make their way through the small towns and villages of rural Spain.

An amazing hike and an affirming experience that will remain with you for life.
