Boreal Heartland Food Products was established in 2017 in the northern community of Air Ronge, Saskatchewan. The business works with local harvesters, a large majority of them Indigenous, to gather plants from the boreal forest that have been used traditionally by the indigenous people for a millennium. The plants, from Labrador tea, spruce tips, wild mint to chanterelle mushrooms, are being harvested and made into teas and seasonings that have been sold and distributed throughout the world. The business has made an enormously positive impact on the community because it has become a catalyst that reconnects local indigenous people with the traditional knowledge about the forest, some of which had been lost throughout the generations.
