Given the little snow and the high temperatures, we made an attempt to reach the Hrafnabjargafoss waterfall. Hrafnabjargafoss is located a little south of Aldeyjarfoss where we were on 25 March. To get there, we drove towards Goðafoss. There we turned onto road number 842. We followed this 40 km long gravel road to the end, where it turns into the F26, a road that you can only drive with a 4x4. In itself this is not a problem, we have a 4x4 here. However, the F-roads are closed in the winter. We parked our 4x4 in a small parking lot at the beginning of the F26. From the parking lot it was almost 6 km to walk on the F26. The F26 was not passable and actually not walkable either. We tried to walk on the verge again, but that was not possible everywhere either. The ice and snow on the road was thawing. There were still deep car tracks on the first part. The water flowed down through those tracks. It was also very wet next to the road. We hoped that it would be drier higher up. That turned out not to be the case. The ground was very wet, thawed and therefore very soft. Even when it seemed dry you sank a few centimeters. Even when you thought you were walking on pebbles. Walking up, with a headwind and constantly sinking into the ground made it a tough walk.
On top of the somewhat flat ridge it was a bit drier. And, we could already hear the waterfall. We reached Hrafnabjargafoss from above. A magnificent sight. Hrafnabjargafoss is, like Goðafoss, a semi-circular waterfall. Hrafnabjargafoss is a lot smaller than Goðafoss. Because you can get so close to Hrafnabjargafoss, it is certainly just as impressive.
On the way back we walked as much as possible over the ridge. That was actually the best place to walk. Although it wasn't dry everywhere there either, and certainly not hard. Walking down with the wind in our backs was a bit easier.
