Just outside of Lake Placid, NY - the high peaks wilderness is home to some of New York State's best mountain and wilderness areas. Known for rugged trails, hardwood forests that produce beautiful fall color, and lakes scattered throughout - this is one of the best places to enjoy the great outdoors in the eastern United States.
Mount Marcy is the highest of the Adirondack High Peaks, sitting at an elevation of 5,344'. While the elevation is dwarfed by most of the mountains in the west, Marcy is not for the weak. If you want to summit the highest peak in the state, you'll have to travel 14.5 miles in total and tackle over 3500' in elevation gain. Rocky trails and often slick/muddy conditions add to the challenge already proposed by the length of the approach. The good news is that this hike requires no technical skill so it is a state highpoint that is accessible to people of all skill levels.
The trail starts at the Adirondack Loj parking area which will cost you $18 for the day, but get there early because the spots tend to fill fast. If you miss out on a spot, there is parking on the side of the road but this will add a mile or more to your hike each way.
