The impossibility of swapping violin and viola in the middle of the piece may be the premise of the piece, however the virtuosity is inherent throughout. And of course the fun! The premiere of the piece was with Julian Rachlin who has often performed it with Janine Jansen. It is also supposed to encourage violinists to play the viola and vice versa.
