A culture for safety in construction:

The Centre for Construction Work Health and Safety Research at RMIT University was recently commissioned by the Australian Constructors Association to produce a set of tools following the publication of their 'Health and Safety Culture' report.

Nick Blismas, one of the co-authors, will present the 'Culture Maturity Model' and 'Climate Survey Tool' currently under development for release later this year. He will provide examples of the use of these tools by large organisations. Nick will also present evidence from a five-year international study that examined the quality of risk controls that were implemented when construction was considered in the design stage of a project. He will present some of the mechanisms being investigated for providing effective construction knowledge into design so that high-level, 'above-the-line' risk controls can be achieved.
