Welcome to our MacBook Air M1 2020 top case replacement tutorial. Tools and parts linked below, including mail-in repair options.
00:33 – Removing the Bottom Case
Flip the MacBook over and remove 10 pentalobe screws. Then, detach the bottom cover and disconnect the battery to ensure safety.
01:26 – Removing the LCD Hinges
Using a T8 screwdriver, remove the six hinge screws to detach the LCD. This unit had severe liquid damage on the keyboard.
02:05 – Detaching Wi-Fi Antenna and LCD
Switch to T5 to remove Wi-Fi module screws, then T3 to remove brackets securing the LCD and antenna connectors.
03:02 – Disconnecting Display and Antenna Cables
Use a spudger to disconnect the LCD and Wi-Fi cables. Continue removing retention brackets and screws for the audio board.
03:54 – Disconnecting Touch ID and Audio Board
Unplug Touch ID, audio board connector, and left speaker. Remove T5 screws securing the audio board.
04:39 – Removing the Logic Board
Disconnect USB-C ports, speaker, keyboard backlight, and trackpad cable. Then remove the logic board and audio board.
05:44 – Removing Trackpad and Flex Cable
Detach trackpad screws with a T5, unplug the cable, and peel it carefully from the battery. Then remove the trackpad and Touch ID.
06:43 – Assessing Liquid Damage
Examine the trackpad and Touch ID for corrosion. The trackpad is damaged and needs replacement.
07:51 – Removing Wi-Fi Vent and LCD
Wi-Fi vent module is glued in. Pry it carefully to release it. Then, detach the LCD assembly from the top case.

Remove USB-C ports. Our replacement top case comes with preinstalled battery, speakers, and keyboard/trackpad daughter board.

Mount LCD onto new top case and secure it with T8 screws to prevent screen damage during reassembly.
10:15 – Reinstalling USB-C Ports and Trackpad
Secure USB-C ports. Insert new trackpad and align the Flex cable before fastening it down with screws.
11:51 – Reinstalling Touch ID
Install Touch ID with 6 T3 screws. Use a cross pattern for even pressure.
12:50 – Installing Audio Board
Inspect the board, reinstall it, and reconnect Touch ID and speaker cables.
13:36 – Reinstalling Logic Board
Inspect the logic board. Reinstall and loosely secure screws before plugging in connectors. We offer advanced data recovery if needed.
15:01 – Reconnecting All Flex Cables
Reconnect audio board, trackpad, USB-C ports, speakers, and backlight cables.
15:51 – Installing Wi-Fi Vent Module
Ensure correct cable routing and screw the module in with four long T5s and two short black T5s.

Reconnect LCD and Wi-Fi antennas. Secure retention brackets for trackpad, ports, Touch ID, and LCD.
