On 18 August 1998, while visiting the Northern Irish town of Omagh in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales discussed the anger he felt when, in 1979, his great uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten was assassinated by the Provisional IRA. The Prince of Wales referenced the event to show sympathy with the bereaved of Omagh. Days before, on 15 August, a bomb attack in the town had killed 29 people. The bombing was carried out by the Real IRA, a splinter group of the Provisional IRA that opposed the Good Friday peace agreement signed on 10 April that year.
