Want to know the best protein powder if you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis? Stay tuned to find out what I recommend most frequently to thyroid patients!
I'm a big fan of protein powder for thyroid patients because it provides so many benefits. Some of these benefits include:
Helps with weight loss
Provides you with a quick an easy meal
Helps control your appetite
Easy way to get extra nutrients into your body
It's easy to prepare and tastes great
Having said that, not all protein powders are created equal and using the wrong type of protein powder can actually make your thyroid worse.
Today I want to talk about the 3 most common types of protein powders that most Hashimoto's patients are aware of and discuss the pros and cons of each.
First up we have whey protein.
Whey protein is probably the most common type of protein powder available and the protein powder that most people use.
Pros of whey protein powder include:
Results in an increase in glutathione production
Lowest calorie per protein compared to other protein powders
Rapidly digested and easily absorbed by the body
Has a better taste compared to other types of protein powders
Rich in the amino acid leucine which is ideal for muscle building
Cons of whey protein powder include:
Hashimoto's patients may be sensitive to whey
May cause gut discomfort
Not all forms of whey protein are created equal
Many contain inactive ingredients such as dyes and fillers
Next up we have plant based protein powders such as pea, brown rice, chia, hemp, pumpkin, soy, and other blends.
Pros of plant based protein powders include:
Usually well tolerated by thyroid patients
Usually well absorbed
Amino acid blend is close to that of whey
Usually contains fewer inactive ingredients
Cons of plant based protein powders include:
Taste can be an issue for some
More calories per gram of protein
May come from a GMO source
Third we have hydrolyzed beef protein powder
Pros of hydrolyzed beef protein powder include:
Paleo and AIP friendly
May be ideal for those with multiple food intolerances
Cons of hydrolyzed beef protein powder include:
It is the most expensive per serving of all protein powders
It is animal-based so it's not ideal if you are avoiding beef due to religious reasons or due to allergies
Taste and mouth feel are different compared to plant and whey protein powders
The source matters!
