This PADS discusses the role of ethics in applied linguistics, particularly in TESOL research. While ethical principles designed by professional organizations (macroethics) are useful, they can become insufficient and sometimes problematic when dealing with everyday decisions in specific contexts (microethics). Researchers need to be cautious of “one-size-fits-all” approaches that may impose a universal understanding of ethical practice. The posthuman and decolonial turns encourage us to adopt a contextualized approach when considering research methods, traditions, and researcher-participant relationships. An ethics of engagement, developed in consultation with research collaborators, seems to be the right approach if we aim for greater equity in research
