Anterior shoulder pain is common among archery or bow hunters. Oftentimes, this is cause by a pointy shoulder while drawing a bow. Drawing a bow with a pointy shoulder places a significant amount of stress through the anterior shoulder, particularly the biceps tendon.
You may have heard of biceps tendinitis, which means inflammation of the biceps tendon. If you develop anterior shoulder pain then it is important to modify form/technique and reduce the pain before it progresses to a more serious issue. Biceps tendinitis is treated very successfully with conservative treatment and rarely requires surgical intervention.
Ensure you are drawing and shooting a bow with proper form to reduce the risk of developing biceps tendinitis. Video yourself shooting several arrows to critique your form to maximize your success and reduce risk of injury. Use the large back and shoulder muscles to draw the bow and avoid the pointy shoulder.
