Cardiac Output is the volume of blood flowing through the heart per minute.
This blood flow changes in response to exercise and adapts over time based on training status.
Resting Cardiac Output is the same regardless of training status. For example:
Sedentary Individual:
Resting Heart Rate 70 BPM X Stroke Volume 70 ml = 4.9 L/min
Endurance Trained Individual:
Resting Heart Rate 50 BPM X Stroke Volume 100 ml - 5.0 L/min
During Maximal Exercise:
Sedentary Individual:
Max HR 170 BPM X 90 ml = 15.3 L/min
Endurance Trained Athlete:
Max HR 170 BPM X 150 ml = 25.5 L/min
The Endurance Athlete can deliver 10L/min more blood to provide more oxygen to the muscles. This leads to improved performance.
