Among all American upgrades during World War II, nothing changed the battlefield more dramatically than the proximity fuse. This tiny electronic device transformed ordinary artillery shells into devastating airburst weapons that detonated at the perfect height above enemy troops, vehicles, and fortifications.
Instead of exploding harmlessly in the ground, shells now burst 30–60 feet above targets, showering lethal fragments across entire formations. German soldiers described the effect as “instant annihilation.” Entire units could be neutralized in seconds, and counterattacks were broken before they even formed.
The proximity fuse multiplied U.S. artillery lethality by five times, making it the single most effective American smart-weapon of the war. From the Battle of the Bulge to island fighting in the Pacific, it stopped assaults, shattered ambushes, and protected U.S. troops when they were outnumbered.
This video explains what made the fuse so revolutionary, why the Germans could never copy it, and how this upgrade became one of the most feared technologies of World War II.
