Deaths head hawk moth {ACHERONTIA ATROPOS}
A complete lifecycle from egg all all the way through to me hand feeding the adult moth.
I show you a run through how I raise these beautiful squeaky moths.
Firstly you need to find some eggs or caterpillars which is usually online. Now I cannot recommend anywhere who sells them right now because I have struggled find them myself and the places who do have them available I have had huge issues with and so I wouldn't feel comfortable using them as recommendations.
Anyway I talk through how I keep the deaths head hawk moth eggs and what temperatures I keep mine at. I talk about some of the mistakes I have made previously while raising these caterpillars and what I have done to improve.
These moths have a relatively quick lifecycle depending on the temperature you keep them at but I try and keep them at room temperature or just above.
The large will eat a variety of foods but I have had the most success raising them using Privet (Ligustrum)
For me this is the easiest plant to find because many people tend to use it as a hedging bush in their gardens and its evergreen too.
Other food sources are:
Potato plants
Tomato plants ( I find it wilts to quick)
Ash
Butterfly bush
Deadly nightshade
I was lucky enough to film a caterpillar moulting so I talk a little about the process and I also managed to film the adult moth hatching!
Its always beautiful see to these moments!
These moths will burrow down when it's time for them to pupate and will need either soil or some sort of bird nesting material to be provided.
I talk through how I feed the adult moth and show you how I unravel his proboscis too.
