King Bayintnaung built the rectangular-shaped Hantharwaddy city in 1566 in accordance with the seven elements of the city. Five city gates on each side of the city wall 9968m. 20 city gates were built by subordinated kings and the city gates were named after them. The gate at the northwest end of the Hantharwaddy was named as Theinni Gate because it was built by Saw Bwar and people of Theinni. During the reign of King Nanda, the son who succeeded to the throned of King Bayintnaung, in 1591, the city wall's pavillions and turrets of Hantharwaddy were demolished and built again into the Thai style.
