Triad toasted Brioche Breafast Roll with Triad skewered skinless sausages with some HP brown sauce followed by a walk along an overgrown stretch of the Ayrshire Coastal Path before returning to the rocky shoreline for lunch - lemon pepper and thyme Seabass with smashed (pre-cooked) roasters and peppers.
This cook-trekking video filmed 2025 along the Ayrshire Coastal Path that leads from Glenapp to Skelmorlie to the extent of 106 miles along a panoramic Scottish coastline. Views of Ailsa Craig subsequently change to the granite backdrop of the Arran mountain tops across the Firth of Clyde all along a coastline steeped in history and teeming with wildlife: wild goats, roe deer, seals, porpoises, basking sharks, otters, foxes, white hares, stoats and weasels, can all be seen by the intrepid ACP walker.
The Path opened in June 2008 and passes by countless Castles, where the Bruce landed, Trump Turnberry, Burns birthplace, Bruce’s Well, the Salt Pans, the Ayrshire Coast where Buffalo Bill performed two shows way back in 1904, the site of the Battle of Largs, where the D-Day landings were planned and where TV presenter Hughie Green was a Commanding Officer, the home Club of the famous Torrance golf family and the only fully restored Nuclear Monitoring Post in the West of Scotland.
Hazards include cattle along the Path and the fast Incoming tides. Don’t worry about the quicksands, the chemical and biohazard and armed security signage along the decommissioned Nuclear stretch though - you’ll be fine! As the seasons progress parts of the Path become overgrown.
The walk ends at a lampost in a small Ayrshire village with barely any public transport. However, it can be extended to reach the famous interior of Wemyss Bay station a terminus on the Inverclyde Line that won the 2023 World Cup of Railway Stations award! The ACP forms part of the International Appalachian Trail.
GEAR used along the cook-trekking travels some of which appear in this video:
Enamel mug supplied by Little Birnam Kitchen.
The titanium version of the Bushbox XL weighs in at 490g or 540g with the pouch - plus extra weight for the grill plates, pegs and extra trivets if you purchase them as well - and altogether makes for an excellent twig/wood burning stove. Great piece of kit that folds down flat-pack style.
The Trangia Kettle weighs in at 190g | 6.7 oz and has a 0.9L capacity - a compact kettle made from durable aluminium that works well on the Bushbox, charcoals and open fire without issue.
The 144g toaster is crafted from stainless steel, primarily designed for gas stove use but equally at home on the Bushbox. Makes great outdoor toasties.
The VARGO Titanium Triad Multi-Fuel Stove is compact and lightweight - approximate Weight: 26grams (outer container), 20grams (inner container). My dual-fuelled (alcohol/fuel tab) stove is their XE model.
Godora Wax Block Energy Firelighters make a good accompaniment as they are 100% waterproof and produce high temperatures of up to 1300°F, providing a burn time of about 12 minutes.
Vargo state “The Fire Box Grill features a hinged grate and panel system for easy setup, fold-flat packing, and fire preparation. It is the easiest way to contain your fire to a manageable size for cooking and boiling water. When open the outer measures 16 x 16cm and the whole thing folds down flat.” A handy piece of kit that takes about 100 grams of charcoal per cook and flatpacks (and fits into the GSI Des Kit detailed below).
The Titanium BiFold Grill has a fold-flat design and all titanium csonstruction. Simply unfold the stove and legs and place the 60+ square inch cooking surface over any fire - the BiFold Grill can handle fish fillets, vegetables, and steaks or simply place your pot or pan on top for over-the-fire cooking.
Essentially it has a folding grill surface and legs and is a strong, lightweight titanium construction - and all folds flat pack style (and fits into the GSI Des Kit detailed below).
Vargo state the following dimensions:
Weight: 3.7 ounces (105 grams)
Length: 7.75 inches (19.6 cm)
Width (closed): 4.0 inches (10.1 cm)
Width (open): 8.25 inches (20.9 cm)
Height (folded): 1.25 inches (3.1 cm)
Height (unfolded): 4.5 inches (11.4 cm)
Grate size: 7.5 x 8 inches (19 x 20.5 cm)
The iBasingo Titanium Serving Plate weighs approx 89g. Sits on yer knees easier than a round plate.
The GSI OUTDOORS DESTINATION KITCHEN SET now customised, goes on every trip. Indeed, both aforementioned grills and much more fit into it easily.
The Berghaus Arrow 30L Backpack is a compact 30-litre number with pockets in the lid and on the sides and has attachments for walking poles and a packable rain cover anchored within its own Velcro-fastened base pocket. Ancillary features include a key clip in the lid. The rucksack stands up to rugged handling and has surprising robust zips and weighs in at 760g.
