One of the things you might be interested in doing in Japan is staying at the traditional type hotels called Ryokan.
But before you go, please keep these three BIG taboos in mind.
1. Not treating the tatami correctly
Tatami is the traditional flooring in Japan made from weaving natural grass.
Please do not walk barefoot or roll suitcases on tatami mats because they’re quite delicate and could easily get dirty or dented.
2. Entering the Toko-no-ma
The Toko-no-ma is the alcove of Japanese-style rooms.
This area is where the most important pieces of art or flowers are kept.
In the past, samurai would keep their katana here too.
Stepping into the Toko-no-ma or placing anything there is considered very rude.
3. Wearing the Yukata outside
A yukata is a type of kimono prepared as pajamas at Ryokan.
Many of them have very cute designs, but they are only pajamas and should not be worn outside the Ryokan's facilities.
