Helicopter Rescue… from a Highline?! 🚁🧗♂️
In alpine terrain, reaching anchors can take hours—and patients hanging in harnesses don’t have that time. Jacob (ex–mountain rescue, Germany) and team share a first-of-its-kind project to lift patients directly off a highline—safely, fast, and within real HEMS/HAC rules.
What’s inside
Why direct off-line extractions can improve medical outcomes
The real risk of steel hoist cables on webbing—and a smarter fix using UIAA climbing ropes
How the team built SOPs, risk assessments, and test flights (30+ long-line runs)
Lab results: 3–4 kN tension, 100 m of controlled friction—and what actually damages (or doesn’t) your webbing
Open-access docs, models, and results for operators & rescuers worldwide
The honest status: still experimental—don’t rely on it yet (hoist tests targeted for 2026)
You’ll learn
Practical mitigations for hoist/webbing contact
How to design certifiable procedures without modifying aircraft hardware
What helicopter crews need from highliners—and vice versa
Who it’s for
Rescue pilots/crew, SAR leaders, riggers, festival safety teams, and any highliner operating in alpine terrain.

Big thanks
Austrian partners (Martin Flucke), Bcraft, Raed , ICAR community—and the many testers making this safer for everyone.
