The “Paratrooper Dog” Who Saved British Soldiers From Mines on D-Day

On D-Day, the British airborne troops dropped into chaos, scattered, wounded, and hunted in the hedgerows of Normandy.
But one of their most important scouts wasn’t a man at all… he was a dog.
Bing, the Alsatian Collie para-dog, jumped from a Halifax bomber under enemy fire with a parachute strapped to his back.
Lost in the bocage, he detected hidden Germans long before any soldier saw them, steering patrols away from deadly ambushes.
He tracked missing paratroopers through the orchards, guided units back together, and calmly held his ground under sniper fire.
Again and again, Bing’s senses saved British lives, earning him a reputation as the battalion’s silent guardian.
After the war, he received the Dickin Medal for bravery, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.
