CARMEN McRAE (Sings Monk) Jazz History #43

Carmen McRae revered Billie Holiday, and one can perhaps hear the influence in her ability to wring emotion from a song. In later life she eschewed the label of jazz singer, in large part because she refused to be stylistically pigeonholed. But most would consider her to be one, and one of the greats. (Anyone who records an album of Thelonious Monk tunes is likely of the jazz persuasion.)

ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s.
