In our final session of our spring semester (2025), we covered two significant decisions affecting the Reform Jewish approach to marriage and family: the Statement on Patrilineal Descent (1983) and the evolution of opinion on same-sex marriage (1996-2000). Looking closely at the literature of Reform Responsa, which draws on Jewish history/memory, present-day precedent, halakhic literature, and contemporary considerations, we learned how Reform Judaism thinks through the pertinent issues of the day and issues rulings that uphold the overarching Reform precept of a Judaism founded on informed, autonomous Jewish choice (a phrase much-repeated in this week's session).
