Caterpillar, Walking (after Muybridge) by PES

The walkcycle of a caterpillar: PES's twist on Eedweard Muybridge's pioneering animal locomotion studies from the 19th Century (which included horses, elephants, ostriches, elk, and many other large land animals, but never an insect).

These caterpillar models were 3D printed, hand painted, and, finally, animated in stop-motion using the technique of "replacement" animation. The walkcycle is comprised of 12 unique solid caterpillar models, which when animated in sequence produce the illusion of motion.
