The perfect time to visit is after a good rainfall. Phan­tom Falls is a sea­son­al water­fall that flows only dur­ing the rainy sea­son and ear­ly spring
It earns its name because it dis­ap­pears dur­ing the dry sea­son.
We managed to pick the perfect day to visit. The wildflowers are in full bloom and it just stopped raining about 1hr ago.

A Lands Pass is required by each visitor who is 16 years of age or older,
however, visitors who are in possession of a valid California hunting or

Phan­tom Falls is a sea­son­al water­fall that flows only dur­ing
the rainy sea­son and ear­ly spring, and Also known as Coal Canyon Falls, Phan­tom Falls runs off the edge of Coal Canyon and falls 166 feet into a small pool at the bot­tom. The hike to Phan­tom Falls is an espe­cial­ly beautiful one dur­ing wild­flower sea­son, but go any time dur­ing the rainy sea­son to enjoy this ephemer­al waterfall.

Cattle grazing on the reserve is used as a management tool
to reduce non-native grass species to benefit the native plants.
Despite the impact, range management practices,
have contributed to maintaining spectacular wildflower blooms.

The history of the falls dates back to the 1800s when gold was discovered in the area.The falls were used as a source of water for the nearby mines and became a popular spot for local miners to rest and relax. Over the years, the waterfall and surrounding area have been used for various purposes, including logging, agriculture, and recreation.

The North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve is a unique and diverse ecosystem that is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life. The area was Created by ancient lava flows, the approximately 3,300 acre table mountain is an elevated basalt rock mesa


Stur­dy closed-toe footwear and water bot­tles are advised when vis­it­ing the area. Garbage cans and bath­rooms are only avail­able at the park­ing lot,
so plan accord­ing and make sure to pack out your trash and fol­low oth­er Leave No Trace principles. Dogs must be on a leash.
Do not approach the cat­tle clos­er than 300 feet.

California newt or orange-bellied newt can be found near the base of the waterfalls. I wouldn't recommend touching one because Its skin produces the potent toxin ,although if you were to touch one they
probably wouldn't hurt you as long as you washed your hands right after. However do have enough poisonous toxin to kill you if you were to eat one. So Do Not Eat It.

Parking : NOTE : Google Maps will take you elsewhere for Phantom Falls Loop Trailhead. Add this address in Google Maps for the parking lot : 2488 Cherokee Road, Oroville, CA. Parking lot is located at the trailhead. Ample parking is available at the parking lot, any time of the day. There are also two restrooms at the trailhead.
