Don't Ditch Loomis... Start Here!

In this video, I’m starting a chapter-by-chapter walkthrough of Andrew Loomis’ classic book Drawing the Head & Hands — and we’re beginning exactly where Loomis intended: Chapter 1, “A Short Chat with the Reader.”

Before drawing eyes, noses, or mouths, Loomis makes a simple but important point: drawing heads isn’t about talent — it’s about understanding structure. Faces may look endlessly different, but they’re built on a few clear ideas that artists can learn.

In this lesson, I demonstrate the real starting point of the Loomis method — the ball of the cranium — and how a few simple vertical and horizontal divisions immediately establish direction, rotation, and gaze.

• How Loomis thought artists should approach the head
• How a simple sphere helps you think in 3D
