Bird strike caught on camera just before V1 - pilot aborts take-off.

Warning - although there is no graphic footage, a bird does die on impact with the plane engine.

On August 29, 2018 we were aboard Philippine Airlines Flight 2814 in Davao City bound for Manila. About half way down the runway there was a loud bang (see 00:39), and then suddenly the pilot hit the brakes very hard. The plane stopped with about one third of the runway remaining. During the emergency stop there was a very strong smell of rubber in the cabin.

Fire engines came out to meet us, but weren't needed. As the plane taxied back to the terminal the pilot announced that there had been a possible bird strike.

We had been recording the take-off from our window just in front of the wing, with the right-hand engine partly in view. The camera was dropped during the emergency braking.

Later, after disembarking, engineers inspected the right-hand engine. After an hour or so the flight was cancelled.

The next day I prepared a video of the incident and posted it to YouTube. Then someone who watched it said you could actually see the bird.

On returning to Sydney I took another look at the footage. It was recorded with our new GoPro Hero 6 in 2.7K resolution at 60FPS, so I was able to slow it down and keep good quality.

Sure enough, there was a large bird, desperately trying to outrun the plane. It failed and was sucked into the engine. So I took the original YouTube video down and replaced it with another with slow-motion replays at the end.
