In Excel VBA, the Record Macro feature allows users to automate tasks by capturing their actions and converting them into code. One key setting during macro recording is the choice between absolute and relative references, which determines how Excel interprets cell selections and movements. With absolute references, Excel records exact cell addresses—such as Range("A2").Select—meaning the macro will always act on that specific cell, regardless of where the cursor starts. This is ideal for tasks that must consistently target fixed locations, like formatting a header row or applying formulas to a designated range.

On the other hand, relative references record actions based on the active cell’s position. For example, if you start in cell B2 and move one cell down, the macro records ActiveCell.Offset(1, 0).Select, making the action dynamic. When replayed, the macro performs the same movement relative to the current selection, not a fixed cell. This flexibility is useful when applying actions across varying datasets or when building macros that adapt to different starting points. Choosing the right reference mode during recording ensures your macro behaves as intended—either with precision or adaptability.
