Refutation and confirmation are the fundamental techniques of persuasion and an early part of the ancient curriculum for teaching rhetoric. In fact, Aphthonius the Sophist said that these exercises "“include[] in [themselves] all the power of the art of rhetoric.” In this video, we work through a few different arguments to see how refutation works (and how confirmation is its opposite)
