Thessalonica is a hotbed of crazy philosophies, cults, con-men, and sorcerers--all competing for people's money and souls.
Paul explains how, while they were there, he and his team behaved themselves with love, care, and selflessness--unlike the actions of someone who was in it for themselves.
He reminds them that they were beaten when they arrived, and beaten when they left. They cared about individuals and worked hard so that no one owed them anything.
In so doing, Paul addresses the numerous accusations that have followed him after he left.
He praises them for receiving the Word of God AS God's word -- and provides the ultimate proof that their message was true: God's Word changes lives.
He then levels an angry attack at those who followed behind him, determined to destroy all that God was doing in the churches he had planted.
He concludes the chapter by reiterating his desire to come and visit them again -- but recognizes that, if he never gets to see them again, he will see all of them when they meet at Jesus' return.
