Assessment of a Bosendorfer 170 grand piano c1925 + individual stringing vs. sharing tuning pins -

WHY DO STRINGS BREAK AND WHAT TO DO:
Bôsendorfer, Bluthner, and some other makers usually have individually strung treble strings instead of two tuning pins sharing the same string. It is thought that this makes the tuning more stable, and certainly, their pianos are very stable. However, makers like Bechstein, Steinway, Yamaha and most others have two tuning pins sharing the same wire, and they don't seem any less stable (Stability is mostly related to setting the pins firmly when tuning).

WHY STRINGS BREAK + HOW TO MINIMISE IT:
However rusty they may look or however flat the pitch is, strings rarely break if these two things are done:
1. Nine times out of ten, the wires break at the tuning pins because they are not passing smoothly through the pressure bar. Lubricate with oil the pressure bar or pin at the top of the string. Take care that the oil doesn't run down onto the dampers!

2. Take the strings down before tuning them up.

If you do both of these things, then strings will rarely break even if the pitch is extremely low to start with.

IF A STRING BREAKS:
Most treble strings on most pianos share the same tuning pin. If this is the case, then when one breaks, you don't have to replace it. Pulling the string, wind the coil from one of the tuning pins, pull it round the hitch pin and back up the other side and attach it to the pin that has the broken coil. Then tune it up. This avoids having a new string which may not be an exact match and will need several tunings before it settles in.
