Here’s some fun backstory: When I first got into Rush, it was around the time Limewire was big, and a friend had burned me a CD with “2112” on it. Well, at least I thought, but it was a whacky limewire download, so from what I remember it skipped from somewhere in the middle of Presentation all the way to the guitar solo in Soliloquy, so I was actually missing a good chunk of it and not realizing. A few months later, a friend found a few of their dad’s old cassette tapes, one of which was 2112 in its full glory. I remember being totally blown away hearing the vocal entrance in Soliloquy for the first time. To me, this album is absolutely the genesis of Progressive Metal. In 1976, nothing hit this hard. Bands like AC/DC and Van Halen were only just starting. I can’t even imagine how eye-opening it must’ve been hearing this for the first time when it first released.
