Changing the Track rod ends on the Clio (a 2002 1.2 16v) before its MOT next week. There is a bit of play in the steering when driving especially at higher speeds, and the play can be felt when moving the road wheel with the car jacked up.
The track rod end is quite easy to change, rust obviously can make it a bit tricky to get things off, however when i was changing the anti roll bar links i got plenty of WD40 around the track rod ends.
An impact wrench also helps when removing the nut, if you find the bolt spins while trying to remove it, put a jack under the track rod end, jack it up to put pressure on the bolt thus holding it in place and the nut should tighten without any spinning.
I put a bit of yellow ink on the threaded section and measured the distance between this and the centre of the bolt before removing the old track rod end, when the new one was fitted i measured the distance again and the difference was less than a millimetre, nonetheless the car will be going for a wheel alignment before it is used on the road.
