Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, designer of the legendary Porsche 911, died April 5. 2012 - 76 years old.
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, who founded the Porsche sports car factories in Stuttgart and also developed VW's legendary 'bubble' in the 1930s.
The Porsche 911 was designed and developed by Ferdinand Porsche in 1963. Besides being an improvement of the legendary Porsche 365, the 911 was also meant to depart from the very obvious Volkswagen influences of Porsche's very first commercial car. The 356 was often cited as the Beetle's cousin, not only because of its appearance but also because both models shared the same parts.
The Porsche 911 had its debut during the 1963 Frankfurt Automobile Show, although it was released to the public in 1965. Early on, it was evident that the Porsche 911 was on its way to becoming one of the major Porsche models, mainly due to public and critical reception as well as the innovations the car managed to incorporate into its design.
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche stepped back from the daily management of the Porsche factory in 1972. He continued as an advisor and member of the firm's board of directors.
