IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (May 21, 2023)
We are on the seventh Sunday of Easter and on this day we are also celebrating the solemnity of the ascension of the Lord. The Gospel proclaims a brief account of the Lord's final post resurrection appearance to his disciples.
On the mountain in Galilee, Jesus said to his disciples; “All the power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always until the end of the age.”
What is most consoling about this meeting is that–Jesus's sending of his disciples to make disciples of all nations came with a promise of his abiding presence. He knew that the mission would not be easy, so he assured them that he would always be with them, strengthening them and guiding them every step of the way.
