THE PRODUCTION OF COMMUNITY AS A LEGAL SUBJECT WITHIN KENYA'S TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND CULTURAL EXPRESSION ACT 2016

The 46th online seminar of The Global South Network (GSN) International Interdisciplinary Online PhD in Progress Weekly Seminar Series Phase IV Jan-Dec 2025 took place on 19 November 2025 from 15:00 to 16:00 UK time.


Aileen W Kimuhu, PhD Researcher, School of Law, University of Exeter will present part of their PhD project titled " The Production of Community as a Legal Subject within Kenya's Traditional Knowledge and Cultural Expression Act 2016"


Dr Niels Boender,Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, African History. University of Edinburgh is the first discussant.

Dr William Jones, Lecturer in Ethnology, Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences, Lund University is the second discussant.

Christine M. Olando, PhD Candidate, Warwick Law School, University of Warwick is the peer commentator.

Dr Joshua Mbinda Ngulu, Researcher, Global Challenges Research Fund, Rising from the Depths Project, School of Law, University of Nottingham will chair the session.

GSN is the only international interdisciplinary network that organised around 150 knowledge exchange activities (including 4 international hybrid conferences, around150 high quality online PhD in Progress weekly panel-discussion seminars (Phase I (https://globalsouthnetwork.com/gsn-ph..., Phase II (https://globalsouthnetwork.com/phase-..., and Phase III (https://globalsouthnetwork.com/intern..., 15 guest lectures of supreme court judges from different countries (https://globalsouthnetwork.com/global..., created a team of conveners, established an interdisciplinary advisory committee (https://globalsouthnetwork.com/gsn-ad..., activated the website (www.globalsouthnetwork.com) and YouTube channel (    / @theglobalsouthnetwork  ) , created editorial board of GSN blogs, organised thematic and geographic groups within GSN, launched GSN mentoring, completed two edited collections on judicial independence (https://www.routledge.com/Judicial-In..., and created opportunities of public engagement for academics from all backgrounds just over a year of the network's launch.
GSN made an unparalleled contribution to equality, diversity and inclusion by hosting the guest talks of judges of both the Supreme Constitutional Court of Palestine (https://globalsouthnetwork.com/the-su...) and the Supreme Court of Israel (   • FULL RECORDING OF JUSTICE RUTH RONNEN'S LE...  ) during the peak of the Middle East crisis. 70% of participants during the GSN activities since its launch in March 2023 were women.
