One of my favourite games on the SNES. You might call this a cult classic as not many people played it back in the day but many of those who did remember it fondly.
It was developed by LucasArts and published by Konami in 1993. There's even a neat Day of the Tentacle reference in the form of a secret bonus level.
The version I grew up with in Europe was simply titled Zombies and contained minor censorship changes. The Jason Voorhees enemy got turned into an axe wielding lumberjack. I still have my original cartridge, although this time I'm playing the US version on an emulator for the sake of convenience.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors is challenging and fun, even more so when you have a friend for two player co-op. It holds up well even today and I wish it'd get a proper sequel.
Ghoul Patrol on the SNES and Herc's Adventure's on the PS1 feature similar gameplay but I wouldn't call them sequels. Neither of them offers the same kind of fast paced arcade action and precise controls that made ZAMN so enjoyable.
Years ago I started working on my own ZAMN romhack. The level editor was still in its infancy at the time. I ended up with a level crash at some point that I couldn't resolve, so I abandoned it. I have my files backed up, so perhaps I'll show off the levels I completed in another video.
Of all the levels in the game I must say that Level 25, Look Who's Shopping, has to be my least favourite. The giant baby is particularly difficult to hit in this level because it almost never stops moving.
The spider boss will be the bane of your existence if you continue the game from a password and don't have enough time to stock up on items.
One neat piece of trivia about the acronym ZAMN is that it consists of the last, first and the two middle letters of the alphabet. I always loved that. ^-^
