Contamination threatens Thailand’s Kok river, livelihoods at risk
.
The Kok River, a vital water source for farmers and communities along Thailand’s northern border with Myanmar, is facing serious contamination, which threatens the livelihoods of its residents.
.
Since April, authorities have warned locals, including 59-year-old farmer Tip Kamlue, to avoid using the river's water due to pollution. Tip, who once relied on the Kok for her crops, has now turned to groundwater, which she feels is a poor substitute.
.
The issue stems from widespread illegal mining in Myanmar, which has contaminated the river with harmful chemicals, including arsenic and heavy rare earth elements, according to research by the U.S.-based Stimson Center. These toxins, released by gold and rare earth mining, pose health risks to millions living along the Mekong River and its tributaries, including the Kok.
.
Local fisherman Sawat Kaewdam and others in the community have voiced their frustration over the rising pollution, fearing long-term damage to their environment.
.
In response, the Thai government has established task forces to address the issue and collaborate with neighboring countries for cleaner water and alternative resources.
