Kinnitty Castle, built on the site of a medieval Augustinian monastery, has origins dating back to the early 13th century when a Norman fortress was constructed and later controlled by the O’Carrolls of Ely. A new castle was built in 1630, but the estate was confiscated during the 1640s and eventually granted to Colonel Thomas Winter. By the mid-18th century it passed to the Bernard family, who transformed it into the Gothic Revival castle seen today through major reconstruction works in the early 1800s.
The castle was burned during the Irish Civil War in 1922, rebuilt by 1928, and remained in private hands until the State acquired it in the 1950s. It later served as a forestry training college before being sold and converted into a hotel in the 1990s. Today it remains a restored 19th-century Gothic castle with deep medieval roots and a long line of notable occupants.
