The Pamba to Sabarimala trek is one of the most spiritual and scenic pilgrim treks in India. It’s part of the annual pilgrimage to the Sabarimala Temple, located in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa.
Route Overview :
Starting Point: Pamba River base (a sacred riverbank)
Ending Point: Sabarimala Temple
Distance: ~5 to 6 km
Trek Duration: 1.5 to 3 hours depending on fitness and crowd
Elevation Gain: Moderate (temple sits at ~4,133 feet / 1,260 meters)
Trek Experience:
Pamba Ganapathi Temple: The trek starts after darshan at this temple.
Neelimala: First steep climb. This part can be tiring but is scenic, with thick forest surroundings.
Appachimedu: A rest stop where pilgrims offer prayers.
Sabaripeedam / Saramkuthi: Where first-time pilgrims (Kanni Ayyappas) leave their irumudi kettu symbolic offering sticks.
Marakoottam: Confluence point where various paths to Sabarimala meet. Often crowded.
Pathinettam Padi (18 Sacred Steps): The final and most iconic stretch leading into the inner sanctum of the Sabarimala temple.
The trail goes through the Periyar Tiger Reserve, so you're walking amidst lush greenery, tall trees, and sometimes even spotting wildlife.
The air is pure, and the serenity of the Western Ghats adds to the spiritual vibe.
Things to Keep in Mind :
Footwear is not allowed during the final approach (Pathinettam Padi).
Plastic is strictly banned. The area is ecologically sensitive.
Proper preparation is essential, especially for those not used to hiking.
Carry only essential items in your irumudi kettu (a twin-compartment sacred bundle).
