We are in the Allegheny mountains, chasing the Western Maryland #1309 the “Maryland Thunder”. Starting our chase along the Potomac River in Cumberland, we watch this massive Mallet work its way out of town and start its climb to Frostburg, Maryland.
Western Maryland #1309 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in November 1949 for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. It was retired in 1956. In 1972, #1309 was moved to the B&O railroad museum for static display until 2014 when it was purchased by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. She started her new career in 2021 on the Western Maryland Railroad.
