You may have always wished for more quality time with your spouse, but it's likely been difficult spending ALL of your time together since lockdown! Clients frequently seek my help and support when they recognize a problem in their relationship but cannot identify the source. "I didn't do anything wrong; it's all him," they say, or "She's the one who causes all the problems." It's rarely that simple, but if you're arguing or experiencing a lot of friction, these Three C's of Chaos could be the cause.
The first "C" stands for command. When you start limiting your spouse from pursuing their dreams or doing what they enjoy, it will cause tension in the marriage. We are all free people who rebel when we feel constrained. You both agreed to specific guidelines and behaviors when you married, but going beyond those guidelines and attempting to be controlling causes problems in your relationship.
The second C you must avoid is criticism. How often have you caught yourself criticizing your partner? You may be nagging them about not cleaning enough, or you may be dissatisfied with how they interact with the children, or you may believe they aren't religious enough. Whatever the case may be, constantly criticizing your spouse will weigh heavily on them. You must catch yourself and refrain from being critical.
I'm not telling you to keep your dissatisfaction to yourself. You don't have to be a martyr all of the time. Those of you who have come to me for counseling or have seen my Five Pillars of Marriage program know that silence is not part of my approach. I always advise people to express their emotions, desires, and needs. You can speak up for yourself and express your needs.
The third C you must avoid is comparing. You may have seen someone do something or act in a way that impressed you and, with good intentions, you may have mentioned how great that person was to your spouse. This comparison is unlikely to inspire your spouse; instead, it is likely to irritate them.
The entire world is in turmoil, and I hear stories, every day, of couples who are stressed out, fed up, and on the verge of divorce. The good news is that the vast majority of marriages in trouble can be saved! It is not difficult to repair your relationship; all you need to do is learn new skills, get the right coaching, and understand how to express yourself to meet your needs in more appropriate ways.
