Why did Arthur Miller write "The Crucible"? And why might the play be relevant today? In this archival clip from "Egg, the Arts Show," Miller draws parallels between the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and 1950s McCarthyism, when the U.S. government persecuted those who were accused of being communists. The cautionary tale illustrates, through characters, how fear and mass hysteria can lead to abuse of power and injustices.
“The Crucible” had its first performance at the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway on January 22, 1953. Is become Miller's most frequently produced work throughout the world.
In this interview, Miller discusses:
• The real meaning behind "The Crucible"
• The mass hysteria and senate hearings that inspired it
• Why the play remains urgently relevant today
