EXPLORING An Old Prison || Al Kasbah in Chefchaouen, Morocco

We visited the Al Kasbah Museum in Chefchaouen, Morocco to learn more about the rich history of Morocco and the many Moroccans who were resisting European colonialism over time. With a prison on the ground level followed by exhibits, and a tower that reaches three stories high, Al Kasbah is a must see on your trip to Chefchaouen. We learned about important figures like Moulay Ali Ibn Rashid who built Al Kasbah as a way to protect the city from Spanish and Portuguese attack after fleeing Al Andalus in Spain during the Christian Reconquista. His daughter Sayed Al Hurra, an active political leader and fighter against Spanish and Portuguese colonization, was highlighted throughout the exhibit as but one example of the many women who were active resistance fighters to the threat of colonization. Al Kasbah is evidence of the ancient, rich history of Morocco and the important contribution of women in building and sustaining Chefchaouen.
