Sion Mills | Old Herdman's Flax Mill | Things to See in Northern Ireland | County Tyrone

In this video, we take a walk around the fantastic Flax Mill found in Sion Mills in Northern Ireland. The Mill was built in 1835 by brothers James, John & George Herdman from Belfast.

Sion Mills was chosen as a rural area of high employment and with enormous waterpower. The Herdmans’ vision was to create a moral, God-fearing, temperate, educated, non-sectarian community around a flax-spinning business in the northwest of Ireland which was a prolific flax-growing area.

There is a museum dedicated to the history of the Mill and the exhibitions bring alive the stories of the mill-owners, the mill-workers and the production of Irish Linen as well as learning about lesser-known uses of linen such as its use in airplane wings during WWI.

It is a fantastic spot to visit to learn about the history of the area in the museum and it is a non-guided facility with an opportunity to view the exhibits at your own pace. Perfect for history buffs and families looking for a day out.
